Basketball hoop installation: what to really expect
Four hours of work. Three days of waiting.
A professional in-ground installation runs two and a half to four hours on site, then 48 to 72 hours of cure time before anybody shoots. That is the whole timeline.
Everything else — surface, anchor depth, the final level check — happens inside those two numbers. Here is what each part actually looks like.
Why going in-ground changes everything
If your only reference point is a portable hoop, nothing quite prepares you for the first shot on an in-ground system.
Families tell us the same thing afterwards: I didn't know it could feel like that. What they are describing is not a feature. It is the absence of a problem they had stopped noticing — no shimmy on a hard drive, no rattle in the backboard, no base creeping when the wind picks up.
Portable hoops move because they are built to move, and that is fine for what they are. But a player putting up 200 shots a day compensates for that movement without knowing it, and the compensation becomes muscle memory.

Installation day is shorter than you think
Three things are on you before the truck arrives: clear ten feet around the anchor site, call 811 so underground utilities get marked, and check that nothing — trees, roofline, power lines — hangs over the spot. Everything after that belongs to the crew.
Site evaluation and marking, 20 to 30 minutes. They walk the space first — slope, surface condition, overhead clearance — then mark the anchor point. Ask your questions here. Once the hole is in, placement is locked.
Core drilling or digging, 30 to 60 minutes. Depending on the surface, the crew either core-drills through existing concrete or opens the ground to depth.
Anchor sleeve and pour, 30 to 45 minutes. The sleeve goes in levelled and plumb, then concrete fills around it. This is the step that surprises people: the pour has to set before the pole goes up, which sometimes means the crew wraps and returns.
Assembly and level check, 45 to 90 minutes. Pole, arm, backboard, rim, in sequence — then pole plumb, backboard angle and rim height all get verified before anyone signs off. A quarter inch out at the base is a much bigger problem at ten feet.
Four hours on site. Then they're gone.
You clear the space and answer two questions. The rest of the day is theirs.
The anchor is the whole job
Standard in-ground anchors set 24 to 48 inches deep in concrete. The exact number depends on pole height, system weight and local conditions.
A 72-inch tempered glass backboard carries far more load than a 54-inch acrylic board, and that weight lands at the anchor every time somebody finishes hard or the wind leans on the glass.
The depth is engineered, not estimated. It is the difference between a system that stays plumb for a decade and one that starts leaning eighteen months in.
Mistakes down there do not announce themselves on day one. They surface later, when the lean is visible and there is no cheap fix — which is the strongest argument there is against doing this part yourself.
Cure time is the part nobody wants to hear
Forty-eight to seventy-two hours. That is how long before the system can take real play loads.
The hoop goes up Thursday. You play Sunday. That is the deal.
We know how it goes — can we just shoot a few, we'll take it easy. The answer is no. Concrete that has not finished curing is still vulnerable to lateral force, and light play can introduce micro-movement at the anchor you will never see or feel, but that permanently changes how the system settles.
Set the expectation before installation day, not after it. Write down the pour date: it is your warranty reference and it tells you exactly when the window closes. Then make Sunday a thing.
The net goes on. Nobody touches it.
Seventy-two hours of leaving it alone is what buys you the next ten years.
Not every surface is ready for an anchor
Concrete is the standard. Dense, stable, weather-resistant, ideal for core drilling. Most residential driveways run four to six inches thick, which is more than enough.
Asphalt works when it is in good shape. It is softer than concrete and moves more with temperature, but a properly set anchor holds. Cracked or crumbling asphalt around the anchor perimeter is the exception — flag it before the crew arrives.
Pavers and decomposed granite are case by case. Grass and soil-only sites need a concrete pad poured specifically for the anchor, which adds time and cost and is the only correct way to do it. A pole set in soil without concrete will shift. Not might.

You could do this yourself. Most shouldn't.
DIY works if you have the concrete, the right equipment for your surface, genuine experience with post-setting or core drilling, a helper, and the patience to get the sleeve perfectly plumb before the mix goes off.
That last one is where it usually breaks. You are levelling against a clock, a small error at the sleeve compounds all the way up the pole, and once it is in, it is in.
