01 | The Moment

The hoop goes up. Your kid sprints outside, barely gives it a look, and asks the only question a ten-year-old cares about: can we lower it?

So you drop the rim to eight feet. One dribble, one step, and for the first time they are above it — ball over the ring, looking down at the net instead of up at it. Something shifts in their face right there. That is the moment you were buying for.

Height is not a gimmick on a youth hoop. It is the whole point. A developing player needs to see the ball go through the net. Confidence and clean mechanics are built at a height where the shot still works; at ten feet a fifty-pound kid heaves from the hip and learns a stroke they will spend three years unlearning.

03 | Installation Day

What actually happens on installation day

The SOAR crew handles the whole job. You do not prep the slab, rent a core drill, or teach yourself concrete work off a video the night before. One call, one crew, most of a day.

Site assessment. The team walks the driveway before anything gets marked — clearance from the garage door, room to drive the lane, sight lines from both sides, and a utility check before any bit touches concrete. On a two-car slab the pole usually sets toward one end so the full width stays playable.

Core drilling. A core drill cuts a clean bore through the existing concrete for the anchor sleeve. No breaking up the driveway, no patchwork. In and out.

Anchor installation. The sleeve drops in and gets packed with fresh concrete. That anchor is what eliminates wobble permanently — not the pole, not the backboard.

Pole, backboard, calibration. Once the anchor is set the pole goes on, the backboard and rim get mounted, and everything is checked plumb, level and torqued to spec at your chosen starting height. Nobody drives away from a crooked hoop.

04 | The Anchor

Depth typically runs 18 to 24 inches into the slab and subbase, and that number is the one to ask about — it is the difference between a system that feels planted and one that shudders every time someone drives the lane.

The sleeve spreads force down and outward into the ground instead of returning it up the pole as flex. When your kid finishes hard at eight feet, the backboard stays where it is. The rebound comes off honest. Nothing in the system has to absorb the hit by moving.

A portable base cannot do that, because there is nothing under it but the driveway and forty gallons of water. It is not a matter of build quality. It is physics, and it does not improve with a heavier base.

This is also the part of the job you never see again. The pole, the glass and the rim are the hoop your kid talks about. The anchor is the reason it is still plumb when they are seventeen.

05 | Cure Time

Cure time is the hardest part of the whole process

Seventy-two hours before anyone shoots on it. Your kid is going to ask on hour two, and you are going to have to say no more than once.

There is a second number, and it matters more. Fresh concrete keeps gaining strength for about four weeks. Shooting, dribbling and normal play are fine at three days; putting a body's full weight on the rim is not, and we ask families to hold off on that for the full 28 days while the anchor reaches strength.

So plan the install. Book it for a Monday and the wait is over before the weekend. Book it for a Friday and you will spend Saturday managing a ten-year-old who can see the hoop from their bedroom window.

The crew tells you the exact date the system is cleared, and again when it is at full strength. The wait is temporary and slightly miserable. The hoop it protects is neither.

06 | The First Week

Then the three days are up. Lower the rim. Let them go up and get above it, over and over, until their arms give out. Keep both hands off the ring until the 28 days are done — the joy is in getting there, not in hanging on afterward, and every kid we have ever watched has been perfectly happy with that trade.

Here is what actually happens next: every kid on the block turns up inside the hour. The driveway becomes the spot. Teammates after school, neighbours drifting over, a cousin who has not touched a ball since middle school suddenly wanting to run one game. That is not a side effect of buying a hoop. That is the thing you bought.

An in-ground hoop with a properly set anchor sleeve. Portable units can tip if a child climbs the base or the fill shifts over time; an in-ground system is fixed and cannot move. Look for a breakaway rim as well — it releases under hard contact instead of sending the force back up through the backboard and pole. That matters as soon as kids start playing at full speed.

For a ten-year-old, 8 to 9 feet is the right starting point. Regulation is 10 feet, but a developing player needs to see the ball go through the net to build confidence and keep their shooting form clean.
