Four feet deep, squared out, filled with quality concrete, cured properly. That is what keeps a hoop standing plumb through ten-year-old dunks, summer thunderstorms and Chicago winters.

Anything less is a gamble with stability. Four feet is where safe starts — and on a 72-inch glass backboard it is not a recommendation, it is the floor.

01 | The Foundation

Why the hole matters more than anything you can see

Most buyers fixate on the hoop itself — backboard size, rim height range, pole gauge. All of that matters. But the single biggest factor in whether an in-ground hoop performs like a professional setup or wobbles every time your kid hits a bank shot is what happens underground.

Here is the physics of it. An in-ground hoop is a lever. The pole is the lever arm. Your kid's body weight hanging off a breakaway rim, a hard pass bouncing off the backboard, wind pushing against a 72-inch glass panel — all of that force transfers straight down to the base of the pole. If the anchor is shallow, the force has nowhere to go except into wobble, lean, or failure.

A four-foot hole gives the concrete anchor enough mass and depth to absorb that lateral load and distribute it into the surrounding ground. It is what keeps the pole plumb year after year, not just through the first season.

It is also why we tell every SOAR customer to let professionals handle the dig. A shovel and a Saturday afternoon might get you three feet. A crew with the right equipment gets four feet clean, every time.

02 | The Four-Foot Hole

What a proper four-foot hole actually looks like

Weekday morning. The crew pulls up to a house in the western suburbs. Dad is out front with his ten-year-old, who is barely standing still because he has been waiting three weeks for this day. The crew unloads, stakes the placement, and starts digging.

Twenty minutes in, the dad walks over and looks down into the hole. Clean square form, roughly eighteen inches across. And it is deep. Really deep. He asks what almost everybody asks: why does it need to go that far down?

The installer points at the pole lying on the driveway. That thing is going to take everything your son throws at it, and everything the weather does to it — freeze, thaw, wind, a kid hanging off the rim. If we don't go deep enough, the pole starts moving. And once it starts moving, it doesn't stop.

That hole — four feet down, squared out, ready for concrete — is what a proper installation looks like. It does not look impressive. It is the reason every bucket your kid hits for the next decade feels solid. Our standard is not negotiable: four feet, squared form, premium mix, proper cure time.

03 | Size and Depth

Does the required depth change with hoop size?

Yes — and this is where a lot of DIY installs go wrong.

A 54-inch backboard on a lighter pole has different anchoring needs than a 72-inch tempered glass backboard on heavy-gauge steel. More surface area means more wind load. More weight means more lever force. Here is how that breaks down.

04 | Going Shallow

What happens if you don't go deep enough

Let's be direct about this.

At two feet, you will notice wobble almost immediately. Hard passes, rim hangs, any real play — the pole moves. Within one or two freeze-thaw cycles in a cold climate, it starts to lean.

At three feet, the hoop might look fine the first season. But the structural integrity is already compromised. In clay or frost-prone soil the pole shifts over time, the backboard stops sitting level, and the shooting angle changes. The whole system starts to feel like exactly what it is — an anchor that did not go deep enough.

Here is what nobody says but should: a wobbling in-ground hoop is not just annoying. A pole shifting at the base can fail unexpectedly under enough force. For a parent who spent two thousand dollars on a setup expected to last ten years, that is not a risk worth carrying.

The fix — redigging, pouring new concrete, waiting out another cure — costs more than getting it right the first time. That is the entire reason our installation service exists.

05 | Soil and Frost

How soil conditions change the dig

The four-foot standard applies broadly, but soil type affects how the concrete sets and how the anchor behaves over time. In the Chicago area especially, conditions vary dramatically between neighbourhoods — sometimes between two houses on the same street.

The frost line is the critical row. In the Chicago area the ground freezes several feet down in a hard winter, and when the water in the soil freezes it expands. That expansion pushes up on whatever is buried — fence posts, utility lines, basketball hoop poles. If the anchor does not extend below the frost line, you will eventually see heave. The pole lifts. The base cracks. The system is compromised.

The frost line in northern Illinois typically runs three and a half to four feet deep. That is not a coincidence, it is the reason four feet became the standard. You are not only anchoring for stability. You are anchoring below where the ground can move.

Professional installers read the soil, adjust the mix, and know when to add a gravel drainage layer at the bottom of the hole so water cannot pool around the anchor base. That knowledge is the difference between an installation and a weekend project.

06 | Start to Finish

What a professional installation looks like, start to finish

For a parent watching this process for the first time, here is exactly what happens.

1. Mark the placement. Distance from the garage, sight lines, overhead clearance. Position is locked before anything gets dug.

2. Dig the hole. Four feet deep, sixteen to eighteen inches across, squared form for concrete adhesion.

3. Set the anchor sleeve. This is where the pole attaches. It has to be perfectly plumb before any concrete goes in.

4. Pour concrete. Premium fast-set mix for most residential installs, filled completely around the sleeve.

5. Check plumb again. Before the concrete sets, verify the anchor is vertical from every angle. This is the step that cannot be undone.

6. Cure. Twenty-four to forty-eight hours minimum before any play, longer in some climates. Do not rush it.

7. Attach the pole and backboard. Once the anchor is confirmed solid, above-ground assembly begins.

8. Final check. Test the rim, torque every fastener, confirm the backboard is level.

Most reputable manufacturers call for three and a half to four feet in their manuals, and four feet is the accepted best practice for full-size residential installs. Where brands actually differ is in anchor system quality and in how seriously they treat the installation itself. Some ship a hoop, a diagram, and leave the rest to you. Four feet. That depth provides enough concrete mass to resist the lateral force of play and weather, and in cold climates it extends below the frost line so the ground cannot shift the pole over time. Treat it as the floor, not the target.

Yes. A 54-inch backboard on a lighter pole can technically be anchored at three to three and a half feet, but SOAR recommends four feet across all sizes. A 72-inch glass backboard has more surface area and a heavier pole, so it requires the full four feet. More backboard means more wind load, and more wind load means more stress on the anchor. Do not gamble on depth with a larger unit.

Wobble first, lean eventually, failure down the line. In freeze-thaw climates a hole that does not clear the frost line will see frost heave, where the ground pushes the pole upward season after season. The result is a compromised system that has to be completely redone at significantly more cost than getting the depth right the first time.

Soil affects the mix and sometimes the hole dimensions, but four feet stays the target in most cases. Clay expands with moisture, so a gravel drainage layer at the base helps. Sandy soil has lower load-bearing capacity and may need a wider hole and more concrete volume. In cold climates, reaching below the frost line is not optional. Northern Illinois means at least three and a half to four feet.

The industry standard for full-size in-ground hoops is three and a half to four feet, with four feet as the accepted best practice, and most reputable brands specify that range. The bigger variable is anchor system quality and whether a professional installation is performed. Depth alone is not enough. Concrete quality, cure time and plumb accuracy matter equally.
