How to install an in-ground basketball hoop — and whether you should
It can be done. It is not a casual Saturday.
A DIY in-ground install is roughly 24 inches of hole, 8 to 12 bags of concrete, two or three strong people, and three days of leaving it completely alone. Every one of those is non-negotiable.
Done right, you get a hoop that plays like a court hoop for twenty years. Done wrong, you get a post that shakes every time the ball hits the backboard — and no cheap way back.
Is it hard to install an in-ground hoop? Yes.
You watched the video. Dig a hole, pour some concrete, bolt on the pole. Looked like a weekend.
Then you watched it again and noticed the two-man crew, the 80-pound bags, the level they checked every five minutes, and the part where they said don't touch it for 72 hours.
This is not assembling furniture. You are setting a heavy steel post in concrete, and the margin for error is effectively zero once that concrete goes off. If the post isn't plumb, if the anchor isn't deep enough, if the mix is wrong — you are not adjusting it later without a jackhammer and a full redo.
Hard is not the same as impossible. Thousands of families do this every year. But you go in with clear eyes or you don't go in at all, and what it takes is not effort. It's preparation.
What you actually need before you touch a shovel
Lock the supply list before install day. Missing one item mid-pour turns a day project into a weekend disaster, and the clock does not stop while you drive to the hardware store.
Tools. A post-hole digger or, far better, a power auger — hand-digging Chicago-area clay is brutal and slow. A digging bar for the hard spots. A standard level and a torpedo level. Tape measure, wheelbarrow, buckets, a drill with a mixing paddle, a wrench set, safety glasses and gloves. If you are going into an existing concrete slab, add a concrete saw or angle grinder.
Materials. Eight to twelve bags of 80-pound fast-setting concrete as a starting point, sized to your anchor kit's spec. Water. Four to six inches of gravel for drainage at the bottom of the hole. The anchor sleeve kit that matches your system — not a generic one.
The item most guides leave off the list is people. An 80-pound bag of Quikrete weighs exactly 80 pounds, you are moving ten or more of them, and the backboard is heavy and awkward. Two or three helpers who aren't afraid of lifting is a material, not a nicety.

The install, step by step
Six stages, in order. None of them can be swapped or skipped, and the first one decides more than the other five combined.
1 · Choose the location. The rim needs at least three feet of clear space on each side and six feet or more behind the baseline for real play. A two-degree driveway slope is workable; a steep grade makes the plumb work far more precise. Position the anchor so the front face of the backboard sits two to four feet off the garage door when extended. And in Illinois, call JULIE — 811 — before you dig. It is free, it is required by law, and it is one phone call. Do it.
2 · Dig the hole. Standard for most residential systems is 24 inches deep by 16 inches in diameter; heavy-duty systems call for more, so read the manual and go deeper when in doubt. On a concrete driveway you score and remove a section of slab first — do not try to drill through it, you will crack the driveway. Once you're at depth, drop four to six inches of gravel in the bottom so water can't pool around the base.
3 · Set the anchor. Most quality systems use a steel anchor sleeve that stays in the concrete while the pole slides in and bolts to it — which is why a damaged pole means replacing a pole, not the whole installation. Lower the sleeve in centred and aligned exactly the way you want the backboard to face, then level it from multiple angles. This is the moment that determines everything above it.
4 · Mix and pour. Lay every bag out before you wet the first one. Mix to the consistency of thick oatmeal — not soupy, not crumbly — and pour in lifts rather than all at once, checking level after every few. Fill to about two inches below the driveway surface and slope the top so water drains away from the sleeve. Cap the sleeve to keep debris out. Concrete is forgiving while it's wet and permanent when it isn't.
5 · Let it cure. Fast-setting concrete reaches initial set in 20 to 40 minutes. That is not when you mount the hoop. Twenty-four hours minimum before the pole goes on, 72 hours minimum before anyone plays, and full structural cure at 28 days.
6 · Mount the pole and system. Drop the pole into the sleeve and bolt it per the manual, attach the backboard bracket, raise the board, connect the rim. Two people, minimum — these parts are heavy and awkward to position alone. Then run the hoop through its full adjustment range and check every bolt against torque spec: over-tightening strips threads, under-tightening works loose over a season.
How deep, and where in the driveway
Standard is 24 inches deep and 16 inches across, but that number varies by system. Heavier hoops with larger poles want more, and the manufacturer's spec beats any generic recommendation you read online, including this one.
For Chicago-area installs there is a second number worth knowing: frost depth in Cook County runs around 42 inches. For a permanent hoop that stays in the ground year-round, setting deeper than the standard 24 is worth the extra bags. A deeper set with proper drainage gravel handles freeze-thaw far better and keeps the anchor stable through a decade of temperature swing. Extra work once, zero problems after.
Placement has no universal answer, but it has a framework. On a standard 20-foot two-car driveway, centre the hoop on one side so the other lane stays usable, and set the anchor so the front face of the backboard lands roughly four feet off the garage door when extended.
Before you dig anything, mark the anchor point and simulate the play space. Stand where the rim would be. Walk the baseline, the wing, the top of the key. Does anyone run into a car, a fence, the garage door? Adjust now, not after the concrete sets. For a ten-year-old on travel ball who is going to grow into real backcourt play, prioritise baseline clearance over everything else — the driveway game that develops players isn't layup lines, it's pull-ups off the dribble, and that needs room.
The first 72 hours are where DIY installs die
Don't use the hoop. Not even a little. Not even if the concrete feels hard, because it will feel hard long before it is strong.
This is where most DIY installations go wrong, and it is never a dramatic failure. The post feels solid. Your kid is staring at you from the garage. Somebody takes one shot, then ten, and the load causes micro-shifts in a foundation that hasn't reached strength — invisible on the day, obvious two years later when the post has a lean and there is no easy fix.
Keep vehicles and foot traffic off the area around the anchor. Rain in the first 24 hours is fine; water does not hurt curing concrete. Flooding the hole in the first few hours is a different problem, so cover it if heavy rain is coming.
At 72 hours, inspect before first use: every bolt checked, the post confirmed still plumb, the height adjustment run through its full range. First sessions are shooting, not dunking. Give it the full 28 days before anyone hangs on that rim.
Nobody assembles this alone.
The backboard and arms are heavy and awkward. Two sets of hands is the minimum, and three is better.
DIY or hire it out: the honest answer
It depends — but most families buying a serious hoop for a serious player are better served by professional installation, and we would rather say that plainly than sell you a weekend you'll regret.
DIY makes sense if you have real construction experience with concrete specifically, access to the right tools including a power auger, at least two capable helpers whose availability is actually confirmed, and you're comfortable owning the outcome if something goes sideways.
Hire a pro if you don't own or want to rent an auger, you're cutting into an existing concrete slab, you want the work backed by accountability, or you've just put $1,500 to $2,500 into a hoop and don't want an avoidable error underneath it.
That last one is the whole argument. You wouldn't spend $2,000 on a premium system and then guess at the anchor depth. The hoop is only as good as what it is standing on.
